Archery Target Manufacturer Hits Bulls-Eye with Donations Superior, WisconsinThe National Archery in the Schools Program promotes the life-sport of archery in schools across the country. Generous donations by the leading archery target manufacturer, The BLOCK are ensuring the program's success. With 23 states now on board and 14 additional states committed to implementing the Archery in the Schools program in the near future, more than 50,000 students will have the opportunity to take the curriculum.
Archery in the Schools, a program initiated in Kentucky in 2002, offers an Olympic-style archery program to the physical education curriculum in the public schools. During the two-week course, the kids learn Olympic-style target archery, as well as archery history, safety, technique, equipment, mental concentration and self-improvement.
The program would not have been possible without the financial support of the archery industry. Many schools are strapped for money and cutting programs, but thanks to support from sponsors like The BLOCK, schools can purchase the $4,800 equipment kits necessary for the program for only $2,400. These generous donations allow twice as many kids the opportunity to participate in the growing sport of target archery. Additionally, each state that enrolls in this nationwide program will receive ten Block Bullseye targets for use in the schools and $5,000 will be donated each year for the next three years to the National Kids in The School Program general fund.
"Field Logic strongly believes in the Archery in the Schools program. We hope that by offering states an incentive they will take the initiative to offer this unique program to their students," stated Field Logic Marketing Manager, Chad Stoll.
Educators are just as enthusiastic about the program as the sponsors. "Teachers tell us that the students are more focused, and anxious to come to school, and attendance rates are up during the two week program," said Kim Brown, director of middle and high school education for the Laurel County schools.
To learn more about the Archery in the Schools program and how you can get your state and school involved contact Roy Grimes, Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources toll-free at 1-800-858-1549. The program is being adopted into each state with the cooperation of the state Fish & Wildlife agency. Field Logic, Inc., the leader in state-of-the-art archery targets and hunting accessories, is headquartered in Superior, Wisconsin. Lawmakers Urge IRS to Investigate Sportsmen's Tax Breaks According to the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (www.ussportsmen.org) donations to charitable organizations are under intense scrutiny by federal legislators who believe tax policies are being manipulated. Hunters who contribute game mounts to wildlife museums and natural history displays are finding themselves in the crosshairs.
Congressman Jim Moran, D-Virginia, a longtime opponent of hunting, and Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, accuse safari and big game hunters of involvement in a tax scam. Sportsmen who donate skins and mounts to nonprofit organizations receive tax benefits for the contributions.
The donation of wild animal mounts to a wildlife exhibit for educational purposes is just like a donation of artwork to a museum, said U.S. Sportsmens Alliance President Bud Pidgeon. The contributions are considered charitable under tax code and it should stay that way.
Rep. Moran is urging the IRS and the House Ways and Means Committee to investigate trophy donations by big game hunters to wildlife museums. He claims that big game hunting outfits are exploiting a section of the tax code and calls for reforms to charitable giving. Sen. Grassley called such donations phony and is demanding congressional action.
It looks like its time for these self-enriching hunters to become the hunted, said Sen. Grassley. Big game trophies and other non-cash contributions are in the Finance Committees crosshairs.
The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nations leading anti-hunting organization, is supporting Sen. Grassley and Rep. Morans efforts. There is no reasonable explanation of how having the mounted heads of animals on display serves the public good, said Michael Markarian, executive vice president of the HSUS.
Pidgeon explained that the two lawmakers and Markarian are ignoring the fact that such animal exhibits benefit visitors who otherwise may never see such creatures. Hunting provides an incentive to conserve and manage wildlife to maintain healthy populations worldwide. It pays for nearly all conservation efforts. I would hope Congress has more important things to do than attack hunters, added Pidgeon.
HSUS in NASCAR According to the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (www.ussportsmen.org) Kari Miller, a short track race car driver who competes in the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series, has added a Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) sticker to her sponsor decals. Miller is promoting the groups Give Wildlife A Brake campaign. It is meant to help drivers avoid collisions with wildlife and educate them about helping injured animals along the roadside.
As with many HSUS campaigns, Give Wildlife A Brake sounds innocent on the surface, lending credibility to the organization despite its true goal of ending animal use including hunting, said U.S. Sportsmens Alliance President Bud Pidgeon. But sportsmen must not forget that when money is donated to a seemingly harmless HSUS program, that frees up funds for the group to invest in anti-sportsmen campaigns.
Millers also plugs anti-hunting organizations on her website, www.karimiller.com. The links page directs visitors to Some of Karis Favorite Sites including HSUS and People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).
Whitetail Fanatic Publisher Tom Fassbinder notes that in a letter posted on her website Miller seems to be defending her association with the anti-hunting groups but attempts to convince hunters that she is not doing anything to jeopardize their sport.
Sportsmen should contact Miller to educate her about HSUSs goals to end hunting, fishing, trapping and other forms of animal use. E-mail Miller at info@karimiller.com.
